Herbert von Karajan - Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem, Op. 45: I. Selig sind, die da Leid tragen

Watch “Karajan conducts Brahms: Ein deutsches Requiem“ in full on STAGE , the new streaming service by Deutsche Grammophon: “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted“. Brahms was never truly a believer, and as he mourned the death of his mother, he conceived his German Requiem: not a religious work, but a profoundly spiritual one, created to console and comfort the living. He never wrote anything more beautiful or more personal, and understandably enough, it brought out the best in Herbert von Karajan. The soloists in this 1985 performance – Kathleen Battle and José van Dam – were at that point two of the most celebrated singers in the world. Add to that the deep warmth and inner glow of Karajan’s beloved Vienna Philharmonic and the result ravishes the ears even as it refreshes the spirit.
