Female indwelling Foley catheter insertion steps (woman procedure) nursing skills demonstration NCLEX. In this video, Nurse Sarah demonstrates how to insert a Foley catheter on a female patient. There are several important steps you’ll want to follow before inserting a Foley catheter on a female, including verifying the doctor’s order, explaining the procedure to the patient, assessing the patient’s allergies, performing hand hygiene and donning sterile gloves when appropriate, and more. Once you get urine return, you’ll want to advance around 2 more inches for the female to ensure the Catheter is in the bladder prior to inflating the balloon. We typically do not pre-inflate the balloon due to recent studies suggesting not to do this.
