A demonstration of the sorts of techniques I might use when writing a microtonal piece of music, in 15 equal divisions of the octave tuning.

I tried to focus on getting a xenharmonic sound out of the tuning whilst utilising elements of regular tonal music to retain some familiarity. A great way to do this is to use familiar intervals in unfamiliar ways, or unfamiliar intervals in familiar ways, to distort the listener’s perception. A perfect example of this is the minor 6 chord used in this track, which in 15edo has a top interval which sounds like a confusing blend between a major 6th and minor 7th, adding a novelty and unexpectedness to the chord which we might call the ’xen sound’.
Apologies that the sound quality isn’t perfect, seems OBS is applying its own compression to the audio which makes the bassline come across a bit gravelly. I’ll try to fix this in future.
