At the end of the Second World War, there were many executions carried out in former German occupied lands but inside of Czechoslovakia and Hungary pole hanging was used. This was a variation of the gallows in which a hanging post was used and the noose was threaded through a pulley system and a prisoner was suspended from the post and then dropped with the noose secured. Many of these executions were carried out in public, and thousands of people watched pole hangings.
