Fuel Tanker Crashes and Rolls Over - HAZMAT mess on Freeway

Fuel Tanker Crashes and Rolls Over - HAZMAT mess on Freeway. No, you are not having déjà vu; this is yet another fuel tanker mishap within a week that we handled. Just like the last job, there was insane amounts of standby time while the tanker was offloaded. While the last job only had a burned tractor, this one was completely on its side and did leak onto the ground, creating a nasty hazmat situation. My dad in Hulk, our 50ton rotator, and Alex in Big Flipper, our 75ton rotator, were first on scene. They were joined by Castro in our 50ton wrecker. We have done tons of these tanker uprights, often fully loaded. You never know what you’re going to get on these jobs; you just have to come prepared and expect the worst. Luckily, the crews on scene worked quick and in unison to container the spill and pump all contents into a new trailer. That left us with a beat up but empty tanker to work with. The plan was to upright and barrel roll the entire semi and tanker after winching it back up to the freeway. My dad figured the freeway was closed long enough and decided to Superman and expedite the job by uprighting it at the same time as it was being winched up the hill. Was it the prettiest and most smooth upright we’ve done? Nope, but it was fast and efficient. When you’re dealing with a full load, the ball game is completely different. But on this empty tanker, he made the call to prioritize speed and opening the freeway to alleviate morning rush hour traffic. Once upright, Castro rigged to tow while they helped cleanup. The job for us was done, but hazmat still had to take care of the contaminated dirt so they were happy to have the scene cleared quickly so they can begin the final part. All in all another great team effort job with multiple agencies. What did you guys think of this long job? And if you’re a fan and would like more, become a member!
