Simpler: Painting with Only 7 Pre-Mixed Colors - Wednesday, Week 37 (30/09/2020)

Once again, the wonderful Tom Croft. We continue working towards a “simpler“ painting, by preparing and attempting to solve this image with seven colors. We’ve now painted with nine pre-mixed colors on Monday, eight on Tuesday, and today we’re subtracting one pre-mixed color, to test if we’re still able to communicate with efficacy thru paint. Short answer is we obviously can solve a painting this way, but what’s most important is the fact that the exercise is throwing me in directions that I had not anticipated. the ability to convey expression was so heightened today, that I decided to say “the hell with it!“ and I just concentrated on shapes. The result is a monolithic, otherworldly version of Tom. I can imagine walking for miles in a procession only to have the opportunity to pray to a five-story-tall version of this painting, placing our village’s harvest in front of it, in the hopes of quenching its thirst for imparting suffering.
