JUMPIN’ AT THE WOODSIDE | Stephanie Trick & Paolo Alderighi
Count Basie, a preeminent member of jazz royalty, was a jazz pianist and founder of one of the great big bands of the swing era. He formed his orchestra in 1935 and featured artists like Lester Young, Billie Holiday, Freddie Green, Buck Clayton, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, and others. Incidentally, Basie was born the same year as fellow pianist Fats Waller. He first heard Fats in Harlem as Fats was swinging away on an organ at the Lincoln Theatre, and Waller’s signature stride style left a lasting impression on Basie, who eventually developed a very distinctive and original piano style himself.
The Woodside Hotel in Harlem was the home base of Basie’s orchestra, and they first recorded “Jumpin’ at the Woodside” in 1938. It became one of their signature tunes, as well a favorite of lindyhoppers.
