This exercise allows fencers to understand the mechanics of his or her own attack; namely the difference between a REACH and a LEAN. The purpose of the seated position is to allow the fencer to focus on their upper body, specifically the extension. Ideally, the neck, chin, and shoulders, are relaxed allowing for a quick strike from a long er extension distance as opposed to a ’punching’ motion. Notice, in our view, the full reaching motion results in a quick “pop“ of the arm. This is especially apparent when performing the seated lunge variation, where the touch should precede the landing of the front foot.
Parents, we strongly recommend recording your child performing this exercise so they can see for themselves whether or not they are reaching with acceleration (correct - 1 tempo) versus leaning, then punching (incorrect - 2 tempos).
